Dk Discovery Day ~ Language Learner, Spanish ~ GIVEAWAY!

Learning a second language is a skill that is highly valued these days! Many parents choose to enroll their children in French Immersion, or may even use other means to help their children develop and learn a second language. This is a skill that will certainly come in handy as children mature. Even as an adult, I covet those who know more than one language. In a world where we do a lot of traveling, and where there are so much multi-culturalism, it is a great skill to be able to get your point across in a language other than English.

I've often heard that it is easier to learn a new language when you are young...and the younger you can start the better. So, with that in mind, we began the new year by diving into the beginning steps of learning a new language with our 6 year old son. Spanish is the language of choice in our home!

We have a curriculum that we've ordered as our main teaching tool, but to come alongside that we've been enjoying the Language Learner - Spanish from DK Canada. This book comes with a workbook, activity book, mini dictionary and parent's guide (all bound into a single book). It also includes flash cards and a CD with fun, interactive games to help build foreign language skills. It is geared towards children and has been a great fit for our son! Although his Spanish is still very limited, these tools from DK Canada are a great way to slowly develop the skills, phrases, etc. that he has been learning from his core Spanish curriculum. His favorite aspect of the Language Learner set is the CD with the interactive games. It definitely makes learning Spanish extra fun, and give him some learning and teaching that is a little more "hands on!" One of our favorite aspects about the book is that it is has wonderful, colorful photos on each page - perfect for helping to hold the attention of those who are learning the language!

Language Learner also comes in French, which is also a popular second language. These kits are perfect to supplement the skills that your children will learn in school, or to come alongside and provide some extra activities and fun games from those who are learning a second language at home.

WIN IT!
DK Canada is giving away a copy of Language Learner - Spanish, to one of our readers! In order to enter please follow the instructions on the form below. Open to CANADA ONLY! Contest ends February 4, 2013.

My 27 month old already speaks some Spanish that she is picking up at daycare. I think this would be great as I'd love her to continue this (and could learn a little more myself)!
