The Healing Herbs Cookbook by Pat Crocker is a recent release from Robert Rose books and I've found that it has been a great resource and cookbook to have on my shelf! Did you know that some of the most medicinally potent herbs and spices are probably already in your kitchen? Or maybe just a shopping trip away? There has been growing evidence in the past years about the medicinal value of herbs and I always think back to the people who lived before we had such sophisticated medicine - herbs were one of their main sources to help with a variety of ailments. However, herbs are more than just medicinal plants...they are also incredibly delicious and can add flavor and taste to your foods like nothing else can.
The Healing Herbs Cookbook contains 115 vegetarian recipes that range from soups to salads to desserts. Each recipe includes whole, natural ingredients along with many different healing herbs that can be tucked into your foods. One of the aspects that I really enjoyed about the book is that it clearly shows us which recipes are for which seasons of the year! So, now that fall is here, I'm finding that the recipes for "Fall" are the ones that contain fresh ingredients that we have on hand and that are plentiful right now. Likewise, there are recipes with foods that are in season during winter, summer and spring. One of our favorite fall recipes is the Autumn Harvest Salad. Apples, carrots, beets...and more! It is delicious, easy to prepare and healthy! Another recipe (which is is in the 'winter' section - but I figure winter will be here soon enough so we can already enjoy this one! :)) that we enjoyed was the Vegetable Frittata. We love these for a nice, filling breakfast, or even for lunch!
Beside being filled with many wonderful, flavorful recipes, The Healing Herbs Cookbook also has a great section at the beginning of the book that talks about specific herbs. It give a lot of helpful details about each herb such as a description, the flavor, parts of the plant that are used, how to grow it, the healing properties, how to use in cooking, cautions and more! It is very detailed and I found that it was VERY informative and super helpful as I was not aware of a lot of the different properties and aspects of each herb. I will definitely be looking back at this whenever I am looking at the benefits, properties, etc. of different herbs.
The Healing Herbs Cookbook is a great combination of sharing information about healing herbs and sharing recipes that are healthy and full of flavor!
